On Tuesday 14 March 2017, Heriot-Watt University’s Student Union held a Global Day event at Oriam Scotland on the Edinburgh Campus.

Around one third of Heriot-Watt’s students are international and the purpose of Global Day was for students of all nationalities to share the traditions, language and food from their home country and learn about other cultures.

Jiaojiao Yang and Kexin Wu, volunteers at SCIBC, represented China at the event.  They had a stall and introduced attendees to calligraphy, Chinese mask painting, Mandarin and traditional Chinese food.  Heriot-Watt’s Principal and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Richard A. Williams attended the event and visited the China stall to meet Jiaojiao and Kexin.

Those who attended Global Day were given a passport and received a flag in this for each country’s stall that they visited.  Jiaojiao and Kexin visited numerous stalls, exchanging culture with students from a variety of countries including Scotland, the United States, Austria, India, Malaysia and Pakistan.  Their highlight was Scottish Irn-Bru, Indian Mehndi (Henna) and Malaysian traditional deserts.
