A Chinese Literary Seminar Held at Scottish Confucius Institute for Business and Communication

Why Do I Write?

On 4th April 2015, Liu Zhenyun, a famous contemporary Chinese writer, featured his writing career with a topic of ‘Why Do I Write?’

Writing, in the eyes of Liu Zhenyun, can not only help you accomplish what you may not be able to do in real life, but also give you a chance to re-interpret the basic concepts of the world and review the historical truth.  You can even find a chance in writing to re-evaluate and make comparisons between different cultures.

During the seminar, Liu gave full play to his ‘Liu-styled Humour’ and brought joyous laughter to the audience.

As a realist writer, Liu carries a considerable weight in Chinese literary circle. His work One Words Is Worth Ten Thousand, one of his masterpieces, won Mao Dun Prize for Literature—the highest literary prize in China. Several of his novels have been adapted for screen, among which Cell Phone and Retrospective: 1942 are most influential. And what’s more, some of his works have been translated into approximately 20 languages, including English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Russian, Japanese, etc.

Ning Xiaoling, the Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the People’s Literature, and Zhou Jianing, a post 80s’ young woman writer also joined Liu and briefed on the trend of contemporary Chinese literary creation and the renewed urban literature in China.
